During the original broadcast, a manga version of Gavan had been published for one year from March 1982 until March 1983 in the children magazine 'TV Magazine'. The stories were quite different from the original TV series (it was probably difficult to adapt the formula to a paper version) but the monsters were the same. The first chapter dealt the arrival of Gavan and Makuu on Earth and the last one depicted the end of the evil empire and the replacement of Gavan by Sharivan.
There were 13 stories, all drawn by Nonaka Minoru.
Chapter One : The Combat Suit that tears darkness (Yami o kirisaku Combat Suit) - Shako monster
Don Hora fails at destroying Tokyo by making the Space Colony crash on it. Gavan and his dragon Dol save the Earth for the first time.
Chapter Two : The little wintnesses (Chiisana mokugekisha)
Yoichi and Wakaba discover Makuu base and get in trouble.
Chapter Three : A friendly stowaway (Aisubeki mikkousha) - Ooma Dako Monster
Retsu discovers that Mimi had secretely followed him during his trip to Earth.
Chapter Four : A booby trap(Shikakerareta wana) - Kaenzaru Monster
Makuu sets up a trap to kill Gavan : they simulate an abandonned ship in space to attire Gavan and to attack him with Double Men.
Chapter Five : A SOS is sent by my father Voicer ?! (Chichi Voicer kara no SOS ?!)
A mysterious SOS which he believes to be sent by his father attires Gavan in a valley. He finds his father's spaceship and even believes to find his father but it appears that it's actually a Double Man.
Chapter Six : Terror of Double Monster (Kyoufuu Double Monster) - Double Monster
Makuu learns the technique to create Double Monster and unleash their new creature.
They capture Mimi to trap Gavan.
Chapter Seven : The dental treatment center of Evil (Akuma no chiryou Center)
Makuu rules a dental treatment center and captures a little girl that Gavan obviously saves.
Chapter Eight : The Monster hidden in the fog (Kiri no naka no kaijin)
Two girls disappear near a strange castle near a lake.
Gavan inquires and finds out it is under the control of Kumo Doubler who captures brides and hides them in his cellar.
Chapter Nine : The bewitching ceremony inside the school (Youkashi no kounaigishiki) - Jaaku Doubler
Youichi's school is ruled by Makuu who organizes macabre ritual inside.
Chapter Ten : The return of San Doruba (San doruba no kikan)
Gavan confronts San Doruba and Kiba Witch for the first time while Hunter Killer is exiled from Makuu castle.
Chapter Eleven : The birth of the little creatures (Youjuu tanjou)
During winter, a strange egg is found and is brought back to Abalon riding horse. The egg turns out to become a huge creature.
Chapter Twelve : Protect the Earth ! Who is the princess Rirala ? (Chikyuu ni ai wo ! Nazou no bishojo Rirala)
Unlike the other stories, this one was created in a funny style.
Gavan meets an alien princess and protects her treasure from Makuu.
Chapter Thirteen : The last battle (Saiki no taiketsu)
Gavan finds his long-lost father who dies soon after. With the arrival of Sharivan, Gavan destroys the Makuu empire and leaves the Earth.
