[Interview]New hit song "Hotaru"...TUBE. Maeda-san thoughts about it asked! Apr 17, '08 ---The first time you publicly sang "Hotaru" was last year at an outdoor stadium live, right? Maeda: Yes. I actually made it sometime around May of last year. Once I had a good deal of it done, I asked, "What should I do with it?” One thing led to another, and the conclusion was to "Let's try it out at a live.", so we sang it at the summer outdoor stadium live.---I heard the fans were really excited. Maeda: That right. There was such hype about it we said, "let’s play around with this song until we get it right.’ While discussing, "What would go best with this melody?" we came up with about six patterns. Truthfully, I wanted to put them in the album "Winter Letter" released last winter.---What is the theme of this song? Maeda: This year marks our 23rd year since our debut, and the times have changed. It's a society now where people ask, "Why was I born into this world?", "Am I even necessary in this world?” Now that I am older, and of the older generation, I thought I could let the younger ones know that, "That's not true.” It's not meant to be a lecture to the young ones (Laugh), I just want them to know that, "We were born for a reason.”--- About when did you find the motif, "Hotaru" Maeda: It was almost early summer, so I was taking notes on things I'd notice about bugs. While doing so, I noticed that fireflies don't fly alone, they all shine, and that made me think, "They're kind of like humans." In addition, I thought it was nice that, "They only appear near clean water.”---Since the life-span of fireflies are so short, we have an image of a fleeting... Maeda: There's a phrase, "Convey an instant, as if it lasts an eternity". You know, "That's how people learn to shine." and, "A person's life, in the eye's of the Earth, is only an instant." However, unless there is clean water, the next firefly won't come. Therefore, this saying can make one think, especially about the environment. ---That phrase, "So I can be seen by you when we meet" (Itsuka Meguri Aeru Kimi Ni Mieruyouni) was very inspiring! Maeda: Lately, I've had the feeling that I don't know if we will meet, or not, but, "If I believe, then someday we will meet!”(Laugh) I've got a bunch of young juniors, but the girls always seem so lively while the guys look bored. I'm a guy too, so I have the feeling, "Let's live a life of fun!” Also, even if it is only with your honor a guy has to "Protect!” don't forget that.---Besides "Living", the keyword "Love" stands out. Maeda: To be living, it comes about when two people love each other, and create 'Life'. So people can give life, and can forgive. A lot of people say stuff like that, but some can't seem to follow through. That's why I want to keep singing, and writing about it.--- On another note, how do you create the songs for TUBE? Maeda: The first thing is the decision on the title. Or really, the image of, "What do I want to sing about?” Then it always ends up, "How about this?", and from there it just happens. By the way, the initial title for "Hotaru" was "Hotaru Yuki" (Firefly Snow) (Laugh).--- Could you let us know your theories on composing? Maeda: For me, "Life" is the theme. I'm not the type to write a song like a story. There are lots of people who say, "That's good" about my songs, but I don't know, I'm not striving to write good lyrics. In the world of music, there are many types of lyrics. I want to write, "Life Lyrics". Whether it be my experiences, things that happen to people around me, the problems of a close friend, or what be it... And, what I'm doing is the samba, wearing a yukata, I'm watching and learning from the world while doing the samba step. (Laugh)---It's important to relate to the melody right? Maeda: That's right. In that respect, I think it's the feeling I get in my throat when singing that is important. Although it looks good on paper, when I sing it I think, "That's a little off" or "It needs to be clearer", and from there I fix things. ---Alright, to close things up, a message to the people watching "Uta Net", please! Maeda: "Come to the LIVE, and watch in person, Alright! (Laugh)" That sounds funny. But really, I would like it if you could come to the live if you get a chance.---Thank you very much!
