Censorship out here irks me. When I was a kid, all the shows that I watched were fairly dark: My favorite Sonic The Hedghog series was based more on the comics and therefore, darker. TMNT and Gargoyles, obviously, it was expected. But when I was the typical unicorn and fairies girl: My Little Ponies, Care Bears, Rainbow Bright, you wouldn't think it looking at the names but ALL of them were pretty dark in areas. Especially the movies.
In fact the first version of The Little Mermaid that I watched was the "anime" one which was exactly like the original fairy tale...no fluffing up the storyline like Disney did (though I loved that she got her prince. I got the happy ending I wished for there). I loved stuff like The Last Unicorn, The Land Before Time, All Dogs Go to Heaven, and American Tail...again, all darker stories.
And did I ever get into trouble or hurt myself? Nope. Not ever. If anything being subjected to the series/movies/books that I was made me incredibly creative. I started writing when I was 11. Thanks to Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (I kid not. My first OTP was Tommy/Kimberly. I regret nothing).
I guess what I'm trying to say is: my parents never coddled me. They were protective, but they educated me enough to tell the difference between fantasy and reality and I ended up turning out all right. A bit
insane but all right. I'm completely harmless, honestly

I hear stories nowadays where children try to copy Naruto moves and get hurt or worse, killed, and think to myself: what is wrong with parents today? They're all overprotective about what their kids watch and then they're nowhere to be found when something does go wrong.
...*shakes head* I promise to be a parent like my mom and dad. Seriously. I think my kids will be MUCH better off (when and if I have any)
