Codex Alera by Jim Butcher ( also known for the Dresden Files series) currently on its 5th book is about a world that combines elemental magic (furies) and ancient Rome. In this world, all Alerans have powers based on the elements. That is, except for our hero Tavi who doesn't have any. Considered a "freak", Tavi struggles to prove to other people that he is more than capable without a fury.
I recommend this book to those who enjoy HP-like books and LOTR. It has action, politics, magic, and awesome battle sequences!:P The world is based on ancient Romans so there is a lot of references to them ( especially Roman military structure).
Funny thing though, I keep on picturing little red skirts on the men
I have a copy of the first book in pdf for those who are interested, but i'm not sure if it's allowed here....
